Since 2004, HIMSS has surveyed the Nursing
Informatics Community to gain an understanding of the role and responsibilities
of the informatics nurse professional.
The survey is the only Nursing Informatics Workforce survey within the
industry capturing professional status, practice trends while identifying changes
occurring over the last fifteen years and has validation for three years. This
year, the HIMSS 2020 Nursing Informatics Workforce Survey explores job titles,
salary requirements, education and training, career satisfaction and barriers
to success. The results are used in aggregate reporting purposes by stakeholder
groups including DOL (Department of Labor), NLM (National Library of Medicine),
ANA (American Nurses Association), NCSBN (National Council of State Boards of
Nursing), multiple universities, HR recruiting firms, provider organizations
and nursing specialty organizations. The results of the Survey will debut at
HIMSS20, with numerous distribution points globally.
Target Audience
Consistent with past HIMSS Nursing Informatics
Workforce Survey studies, this year’s effort will once again garner the
insights from nursing informatics professionals, nursing informatics
executives/CNIOs; nursing leadership involved in technology and larger
applicability to nursing audience

Survey Timing
The
2020 HIMSS Nursing Informatics Workforce Survey is scheduled to be released in
the Fall of 2019 per the following timeline:
- August 2019: begin survey development
- September 2019: finalize survey instrument
- October 2019: begin data collection
- December 2019: begin
data analysis
- January 2020: first draft of report due
- February
2020: finalize report
- March 2020: release report and begin supportive
marketing campaign in conjunction with HIMSS Global Conference
