A water quality monitoring program is essential for assessing the effectiveness of a golf course's Best Management Practices and Integrated Pest Management program. Unlike irrigation water source testing for agronomic decisions, water quality monitoring based on scientific principles helps superintendents confirm and communicate the proper management strategies. It ensures minimal or improved surface water quality as it moves through the course. Monitoring also identifies any adverse impacts, enabling corrective actions. The presentation will outline two primary monitoring approaches: visual (and olfactory) inspections and water quality sampling programs. Visual surveys involve regular observations to establish baselines and note changes over time, while water quality sampling requires upstream and downstream data collection points to track trends effectively. Methods discussed include DIY kits, meters, and laboratory testing, covering essential parameters like dissolved oxygen, pH, nutrients, and, for groundwater, pesticides and herbicides.
